In May of 1995, then Governor George W. Bush, signed the Texas Concealed Handgun Law. This law allowed, for the first time in over a century, law abiding Texas residents to legally carry a sidearm for their own protection and the protection of their families. Currently there are only some 250,000 active licenses in the state of Texas . That's only a little over 1% of the state's entire population, far from overwhelming numbers and certainly not the “return to the old west with a gunfight on every corner” that the detractors swore would become commonplace if this law was enacted. Pistol Prowess is proud to offer instructional classes which lead to the issuance of the Texas Concealed Handgun License to qualified applicants. We feel everyone who qualifies should take advantage of the law allowing responsible Texas citizens to carry a concealed weapon. With the startling rise in violent crimes that our city is experiencing, the sad fact is that confidence in our own local police's ability to protect us has led some of our residents to call for outside intervention from the Guardian Angels to curb crime in their neighborhood. The police department themselves admit that they are woefully undermanned and unable to handle the crisis in the timely manner that they would prefer. They are taking steps to remedy that situation, but there is no quick fix to the problem. We are also dealing with the explosion of violent street gangs taking over certain parts of our town with their drug trafficking, shoot-outs and drivebys with rival gangs. These people don't seem to play well with others - the next thing you know they'll be running with scissors! I could go on, but you see where I'm going with this. The way I see it, the state, in its infinite wisdom, gave its citizens the ability to help defend themselves when all other options have failed. This doesn't mean everyone should go out and “cowboy up.” Carrying a firearm is a very important decision and not for everyone, but, if you feel you can handle the responsibility of being armed, it IS an option available to you with minimal inconvenience on your part. It is certainly a sense of security that is afforded to you that is better to have and never need, than to need and not have. The course is not difficult, and consists of a day in class learning such things as Texas Penal Code Statutes as they affect the CHL holder, non-violent dispute resolution, the use of force and/or deadly force and some basic shooting skills. We then take a couple of hours, usually on Sunday afternoon for the handgun proficiency test. Please don't misunderstand, though we don't expect you to be a Wyatt Earp or Matt Dillon, this is NOT a learn to shoot course, the state expects you to already be somewhat proficient in the use of a handgun. Though the handgun proficiency test is not hard by any stretch of the imagination, it is a timed fire exercise at ranges out to 15 yards and there is a minimum passing score that must be shot before you can graduate the CHL class. We always have classes forming or you may schedule a private class taught on your schedule at your home or office. The fee for our regular classroom sessions cover all aspects of the course, course material, classroom instruction, two sets of fingerprints, two passport photos, notary fees, range fee, targets, Heck! we even buy your lunch. The only additional cost to you is the ammunition you shoot and your state application fee. Please call us at 281 686 5603 for class information, scheduling and to make your reservation.
